Music technology hackathons now happen all around the world and lead to the conception and creation of innovative projects. While instruments, electronics and software can be hacked to create new production and performance tools, this is merely one kind of hacking. How can music itself be hacked? And is the definition of music even the same for everyone?
In this combined talk and performance Adam John Williams—a multidisciplinary digital artist, musician, and electronic hardware hacker—will examine the creative space where the lines between hacking and making music blur.
By combining techniques gleaned from psychoacoustics with anomalies in the way we perceive sound, Adam John Williams will open up some strange new musical possibilities. Among other things, he will demonstrate tracks which sound “right” at any tempo, or tracks which are one genre when played forwards and another when played backwards.
