The Recipe for the Future

In partnership with Polarbröd

The Earth’s resources are under enormous stress. To address this challenge and avoid the collapse of the food system, we need to find a sustainable way of living and a regenerative approach to what we eat.

MTF Labs is a global community of brilliant minds from a wide range of disciplines - and we know that there are so many fantastic and creative ideas out there that could help make an enormous difference. We want to leverage and build upon your ingenuity and creativity to help create opportunities for a good and healthy life for generations to come.

Framtidsreceptet (Swedish for “the recipe for the future”) is a new initiative where we ask for your good ideas and solutions to a sustainability challenge and then, with the help of designers, food scientists, technologists, researchers, makers and other experts from the MTF community, we help you develop those ideas into tangible prototypes and concept storyboards.

With the help of our partners at Polarbröd, we then champion the idea to be taken forward as a product, research project, new venture - or anything else that might help make a more sustainable world.

Framtidsreceptet labs at Polarbröd in Umeå

Framtidsreceptet brings together innovators and their ideas in a labs event to develop initial prototypes and storyboards for the projects that address the challenge “A sustainable plate of food”. The intention is to refine the initial suggested ideas into workable and practical projects that can then be supported and further developed into sustainable products, enterprises, research projects, or initiatives.

Framtidsreceptet launch at the European Youth Parliament

At the meeting of the European Youth Parliament in Stockholm on 24-26 November 2023, the team from MTF Labs set up a video booth to collect ideas for future food sustainability as part of the Framtidsreceptet project. Here are some of the ideas we received. What’s yours?

Technological

Your idea might be for a mobile app, a new IoT device, AI system, software, or piece of hardware.

e.g. “A plate that can detect and tell you the distance the food on it had to travel to get there!”

Educational

You may want to suggest innovative youth programmes and activities, educational games, websites for public awareness, or new academic research.

e.g. “A new curriculum for primary schools about where food comes from.”

Conceptual

You might have a big idea about reimagining farming, supply chains, new policy or regional initiatives.

e.g. “A city scheme that incentivises local residents to establish community gardens and exchange locally grown vegetables.”

1. SEED PHASE

This year’s theme:

“A more sustainable meal”

You can go into great detail if you wish, but it really doesn’t have to be more than a sentence or two. Just your response or creative idea that addresses that challenge. You can record a quick video, submit an audio file or write some text - whichever you prefer. The links to do that are below.

REMEMBER: Your idea remains yours, and if we choose to develop it further, we will get in touch!

Deadline: 31 January 2024 - SUBMISSIONS CLOSED

2. GROWTH Phase

From out of 129 brilliant submissions representing over a dozen different countries, the MTF Labs Framtidsreceptet team, together with our colleagues at Polarbröd, selected FIVE very different ideas that we think we can help bring into the world.

From 14-16 March 2024, we’re gathering an interdisciplinary group of MTFers to prototype and storyboard those ideas in a multi-day innovation, prototyping, design and development event in Sweden.

Francisca Siza, David Cox, Kasimir Suter-Winter, Sofia Nordén and Francisca Gonçaves will work with product designers, developers, nutritionists, food industry experts and other innovators to help develop their ideas.

3. HARVEST PHASE

We will present the Framtidsreceptet prototypes and concepts at an event run by Polarbröd in Stockholm in May 2024.

We’ll introduce the projects to innovative organisations, social impact investors and influential stakeholders and invite them to work with us to help bring these ideas into reality.

As with all MTF Labs initiatives, the creators of the projects own the intellectual property. If your idea is developed, you will be credited appropriately. If you help build the prototype, you share in its ownership. We will work with you to ensure that any ongoing development or investment is fair and equitable.

We want to help you make the world more sustainable.
