THE FESTIVAL OF MUSIC IDEAS...

Music Tech Fest pulls the entire music technology ecosystem under one roof – from the big guys in the music industry and media, music tech startups and apps creators, to developers, artists, performers, researchers, creatives and hackers. The whole thing runs as a ‘festival of ideas’ rather than a conference, mixing performances and presentations, demos, installations, as well as good old tinkering.

In 2014, we are taking Music Tech Fest on tour – to Wellington Feb 26-28, Boston Mar 21-23, London September 5-7, Berlin October 24-26, Paris November 21-23.

See the videos of performances, demos and hacks on the Music Tech Fest channel and read about the collaborations and innovations on our blog. For a great wrap-up of the 2013 edition go to one of our favourite blogs: the Kitmonsters report of day 1, day 2 and day 3.

In 2012, BBC Outriders called it “the future of music”.

Follow us @MusicTechFest.

The Art of Noise: Art Hack @ the Music Tech Fest

“Sound has featured extensively in art installations since Luigi Russolo’s Futurist manifesto ‘The Art of Noises’ described the sound of the urban industrial landscape and became the source of inspiration for many artists and composers (e.g. Edgard Varèse, John Cage and Pierre Schaefer) [Russolo, 1913]. Recent music technologies offer increased opportunities for immersive sound art experiences and physical explorations of sound. Art installations offer novel ways of using these technologies and enable novel experiences particularly through placing the focus on the audience and their context.”
Roadmap for Music Information Research, 2013 (mires.cc)

100 years after Russolo’s “The Art of Noises” it’s time to roar again, “cross our great modern capital with our ears more alert than our eyes”, tool up, team up, make noise, perform it and broadcast it, with rumbles, roars, explosions, crashes, splashes, booms, whistles, whispers, hisses, snorts, grumbles, gurgles, screeches, creaks, buzzes, crackles, scrapes, noises obtained by percussion on metal, wood, skin, stone, terracotta, and voices of animals and men.

“Music was born free; and to win freedom is its destiny. It will become the most complete of all reflexes of Nature by reason of its untrammelled immateriality. Even the poetic word ranks lower in point of incorporealness. It can gather together and disperse, can be motionless repose or wildest tempestuosity; it has the extremest heights perceptible to man – what other art has these? – and its emotion seizes the human heart with that intensity which is independent of the ‘idea’.”
Ferruccio Busoni, “Sketch for a New Aesthetic of Sound Art”, 1906

iFOLK - an acoustic laptop by Tore Honoré Bøe

You are invited to play an "acoustic laptops" made by transmedia artist Boe. It is one of many wood boxes with various tiny objects attached inside; springs, stones, metal, rubber, string, needles, memorabilia - amplified by a contact mike (piezo).

The acoustic laptops are musical instruments with which you can explore a soundworld that usually pass unnoticed and thus connect with unfiltered reality in a pleasurable way. Whereas Boe uses them to produce the microsounds he desires in his electro-acoustic music, a growing number of other musicians have started using them as additional effect gizmos. Boe has performed lots of concerts with them, mostly on his own, but due to their versatility also in free improv collaborations with colleagues.

Boe also gives workshops where people are invited to create their own "personal pc's". These events are always entertaining, for young or old, for the previously informed or the absolute amateur. Thus the acoustic laptops as functional flux-boxes have starred in both informal social settings and the established world of art.

In these times of digital options and general gadget worship, the acoustic laptops demonstrate the complexity of simplicity, the reframing and recycling of objects, the contemporary urge to reconnect to hands-on creation and the ethos of the do-it-yourself culture.

The acoustic laptops are not an anti-digital statement, they are a neutral addition that form a great platform for altering the perception of possibilities. Best of all: No password is needed.

As if you were tossing and turning in bed, trying to get back to your dreams: This is what Lucia Lip’s stompy, jarring electro music is like, with its own punk attitude and catchy psychedelic poplines, it will make you stay up all night. LUCIA LIP from Berlin, well known for her intense live performances introduces herself hammering her rough, snotty sound into your ears. In a tender yet angry way she stomps her dancefloor-ready beats into the ground. And yet there’s a longing there, sweet melodies in amongst all the messiness. LUCIA LIP mixes and produces her music fully herself. The almighty wire, berlin wrote: 'LUCIA LIP performs on stage almost in a trance as her backing tracks explode behind her. Trashy and beat-heavy electro provides an echoed noise backdrop from her stomping, violent and generally unsettling performances'.

Activating Memory is an innovative experimental composition for 8 performers: a string quartet and BCMI quartet. BCMI stands for Brain Computer Music Interface. The BCMI quartet involves four persons wearing a brain cap furnished with electrodes to read information from the brain of 4 persons. I teamed up with g.tec, manufacturer of biomedical technology, and Joel Eaton at ICCMR, to design an extraordinary machine that converts brain information into musical scores. During the performance, the BCMI quartet generates musical scores to be performed by the string quartet in real-time. Each member of the BCMI quartet generates a part for a musician of the string quartet.

Loudness changes our perception of music. As a mixer or mastering engineer, you must constantly ask yourself, "Is this really better? Or just louder?" Making accurate, impartial judgements about this has always been difficult, and a key skill which can take years to learn. Until now. Ian Shepherd's "Perception" plugin allows you to hear through “loudness deception” and make truly impartial, accurate decisions about the best possible sound for your music – quickly and easily. Instantly bypass entire FX chains to make loudness-balanced A/B comparisons of EQ settings, compression and more. Perception will level-match and sync your sources so that "loudness deception" and plugin delay do not influence your decisions. https://www.meterplugs.com/perception

MICROVERSE is a new collaboration between live composer Lossy and visual artist Strangers Are People Too. Originally inspired by experiments with microscopes and natural objects, this work is an exploration of the epicness within the minuscule, a journey to the extraordinary realms that can be found within the ordinary. Here you will find acid techno bass lines layered with orchestral brass, vintage synth sounds blended with overlapping saxophone, along with dystopian warped piano and noise-based sound design. The music is layered up in live loops of electronic and acoustic sounds, all based around a minimal 16 note sequence, taking us through four distinct movements while visuals of electrified organica journey through imagined inner worlds. Continuum for my improvised sets. I own lots of pedals that are used as modular building blocks for different sounds. Sound sources differ from samplers, synths, drum machines, guitar, turntables to human voice. I always use what I'm feeling at the moment, but keep the selected set always minimal. Reason to do this is the pure enjoyment of being flexible on stage and explore sound. The total freedom of improvisation have had a huge appeal to me lately. One doesn't get bored playing already recorded and arranged tracks night after night, but has a momentum to create something tickling on the go. It's a surprise to the listener, but also to the creator. As ideal my goal is to build a setup, which sound source is easy to control, but the possibility of created sounds are open. To achieve this I'm feedbacking the signal through the pedals and controlling the outcome with a mixer.

Founded in 2007 by beatboxer EZRA, Organic Orchestra's Company has been making works that combine human beatbox and new technologies. For almost ten years, EZRA has brought together the complementary talents of artists and engineers from various European countries.

The team of Cie Organic Orchestra aims to create profoundly contemporary shows that by being based on the universality of beatboxing, become accessible to all. The stage is transformed into an open space of exploration for multiple publics, where ones senses are opened up and newcomers are initiated into an intimate poetic style of beatboxing.

The focus of the company is to create shows and offer educational workshops, but this is simply the core of a wider project, i.e. the Organic Orchestra Lab – a laboratory exploring the techniques and science of performing artst

Made up of numerous researchers in sound, light and video, the Company seeks to establish new relationships within the artist-spectator-art work triad, by producing pieces that are deeply interactive. The team thus employs and even creates new technological tools thus using machines to bring people and aesthetics together.

Besides the shows, both artists and developers share their practice and their research with the audience, through educational workshops.

OSCILLA is an interactive installation that explores harmonic structures and their visualization by enabling ‘musical’ interplay within a responsive audio-visual environment. A projected scalable interface allows for context-specific adaptability and for a variety of intuitive physical interaction paradigms whereby the positions and movements of people or objects, optically tracked within a given area, determine the volume and pitch of a set of sine-wave oscillators. Each position and frequency value is projected on the main surface, along with music notation, while a visual representation of the resulting combination of sounds (Lissajous curves) is plotted in real-time on a second screen. The oscillators' outputs, when discretely amplified by multiple loudspeakers, also provide different auditory spatial perspectives into each harmonic structure, while enhancing natural acoustics and resonances of the installation space. Participants can thus create morphing chords and harmonies, explore unusual microtonal intervals and beat frequencies while discovering the fascinating relationships between harmonic structures and their visual counterparts. Inspired by the ‘Oscilla’, votive objects of the Latin tradition, the installation is also conceived a sort of ‘modern ritual’, (hence the candles used in some of the documented versions) a ‘window’ from which to peek into the powerful underlying ‘harmonic’ laws that seem to govern our world and allow ourselves to wonder.

Rahra Avis is a strange bird born from the blending of Latin-American classic beats and alternative electronic music. It is a project created by us: Eugenia Tapia (singer & composer, Rüderdorf/Germany) and Andrés Santana (Guitar & composer,Santiago /Chile).We are two musicians, with very different trajectories, who decided to join their experiences and influences to create music by merging latin, soul, avant-garde, electronic and ethnic music. We met while studying music in Chile and we played together in small projects; but the time wasn't right at that moment. Only in 2008, 10 years after, the bird began to take form. It all started in Barcelona, I (Andrés) was chatting with a friend sitting outside a mexican restaurant, drinking a "carajillo", and by the road came Eugenia riding her bike. We saw each other and: surprise! it seemed to us as if our encounter was predestined: at the right time and each one of us with a distinct and unique experience, we created the sound system duo Rahra Avis. After a few years of work and development in Barcelona, we migrated to Berlin ( 2010 ) in order to breathe fresh air, take new influences and continue to grow, create and learn but never losing our own language. In Berlin we met Kakita, in visual arts, with incredible ideas and solutions. We asked him to help us creating a visual sound, an electronic avant-garde project, a band where musicians are not the priority but the whole musical experience is, where we can explore and improvise in every aspect, without loosing the emotional sense and musicality.

Riff Raff was started by Matthew Fone 2 years ago with an intention to produce continually some of the best music videos and commercials out there, as well as diversifying into other areas that stimulate and expand us all.

His background as a producer of award winning work on commercials such as Cadburys 'Gorilla", John Lewis "Always a Woman" and videos for the likes of Coldplay, Madonna, LCD SoundSystem, Kings of Leon, The Streets (blah blah blah etc etc) has always driven him to do work for the quality rather than the financial quantity (stupid ?). "Hey i'd rather look after the kids" he said writing this.

The desire is not to grow too fast but keep a focus, coupled with a desire to promote up and coming talent through "the Nursery of Evil".

The reason we are stimulated to work with Music Tech Fest is like all people interested and in love with music it’s interesting to be part of finding out the boundaries and pushing things forward. Like the question everyone asks “how do you become a director/producer?” You actually go out and do it / make something and see what happens.

Enjoy.

An interactive sound installation exploring the power of music to bind individuals together and the visceral urge to use technology to broadcast our identity, The Cave of Sounds relates the prehistoric origins of music to the contemporary practise of music hacking where technology is subverted to create original musical sounds and instruments.

The Cave of Sounds is the outcome of a ten month residency being undertaken by Tim Murray-Browne with the Music Hackspace through Sound and Music’s Embedded Composer in Residence programme. Working closely with a group from this community, the piece is an exploration into the nature of collaboration within the music hacking scene. It will feature as a work in progress installation in the Music Tech Fest 2013.

Each month the group has met to demonstrate and explore how the different instruments work together to let them evolve organically and find their role within the ensemble, making up a set of newly conceived musical instruments. The Cave of Sounds seeks to disrupt the boundaries between performer and audience. Regardless of training, visitors are invited to actively participate and experiment with new ways of creating and connecting with each other through sound. In the hands of its audience, the work is crafted to provoke participants to connect and resonate with each other through musical expression.

Unrepeatable) is a musical instrument, which consists of recorded musical sequences performed by different musicians developing their individual musical language. It is a derivative of a music group which appeared for the first time under the name of “Privid, prisluh” (Audiovisual illusion) and is now continuously multiplying. The musician can make music by selecting the source, defining volume and randomness, which generates a continuous and unrepeatable composition. “Privid, prisluh” is a continuously evolving creation, combining original and live music. It is taking place at the intersection of technologically processed contemporary sonority and the elementarity of digitized clean sounds. It is a meeting place of the absent technologically reproduced performers and the immediate presence of the live musician in a concert context. It is a confrontation space of spontaneous solo performance and the subsequent structuring of individual musical presences, joined by a musician as a real presence in live performance.

Daniel Jones is a doctoral researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London, exploring the relationships between complexity, creativity and social dynamics. This manifests itself in both scientific and artistic output: he has published work on music theory, creativity, systems biology and artificial life, and exhibits his digital work internationally, harnessing algorithmic processes to create self-generating artworks.

Recent works include The Listening Machine (with Peter Gregson, 2012), a 6-month-long sound work which translates social network dynamics into a piece of orchestral music, recorded with Britten Sinfonia and commissioned by the BBC/Arts Council's The Space; Variable 4 (with James Bulley, 2011), an outdoor sound installation which transforms live weather conditions into musical patterns; Maelstrom (with James Bulley, 2012), which uses audio material from media-publishing websites as a distributed, virtual orchestra; Horizontal Transmission (2011), a digital simulation of bacterial communication mechanisms; and AtomSwarm (2006—2009), a musical performance system based upon swarm dynamics.

Daniel co-ordinated the technical infrastructure for The Fragmented Orchestra, winner of the prestigious PRSF New Music Award 2008. His audio development work for Papa Sangre and The Nightjar was nominated for two BAFTAS, including “Audio Achievement”.

The development of sensor technologies, the adaptation for practical applications and the fast computing power of today's devices offer fascinating new possibilities for the creation and consumption of digital music. Complex calculations can be done in milliseconds and so directly influence the music which is being played. In real time. But how much more exciting is it to put the tremendous computing power in the service of composition and interpretation itself. Composition, takes place apart from reception, at least so far. Interpretation provides an interface. And just like a jazz pianist uses scales and chords for the interpretation of an existing song, a computer can do the same using the appropriate software. Through the software engine of Nagual Sounds, any kind of input data can be used as a tool to personalize pieces of music, in order to create individual interpretations of a source file in real time. Through this, music is vividly and intuitively controllable. Nagual Sounds used the data of a 3D camera (Kinect) for their first product Nagual Dance – an interactive musical instrument, played with the body. A smartphone app which uses the Gyro- and accelerator sensor for music creation is in development.

Charlie Inskip worked in artist management and music PR for twenty years. His recent AHRC-funded PhD, ‘Upbeat and Quirky, with a bit of a Build’ investigates the search behaviour of creatives in the music, film and advertising industries who are combining music and moving images. He is developing a cataloguing scheme to facilitate this process, using criteria such as mood, tempo and other musical content features.

His work focuses on the participants in the process, the way they talk about music, and the outcomes they plan to achieve. He aims to inform the development of systems that may be used to effectively search through large music collections in a meaningful way for the purpose of music synchronisation. Charlie believes that successful systems stand or fall on the involvement of the user and that inter-disciplinary co-operation is a wonderful thing.

Usually you would use a typewriter knowing the outcome, however this typewriter whose mechanism is attached to a series of fishing lines, allowing an unknown outcome unique to each key. These wires are all linked to little hammers, and when their key is pressed, the hammers strike all a variety of things to produce different sounds: empty jars of pasta sauce, cans, bottles, foil. There aren’t any patterns or arpeggios, the excitement is in the inherent unpredictability of the contraption. It is difficult to guess which key is linked to which hammer, so something as mundane and everyday as a qwerty keyboard becomes incredibly unpredictable as to its output.

He has been on stage around the world and played as a solo artist in France's most mythical venues (Olympia, Cigale, Transmusicales…). He has been developing his work with great versality and an ease on stage that have led him to collaborate with internationally famous artists (Kid Koala, Bauchklang, Wax Tailor, One self, Socalled…) He has also gone on a world tour with French singer Camille.

Ezra has kick-started and taken part in numerous pieces combining music, video, dance and scenography such as Bionic Orchestra, Five Fingers projects, or collaborations with the Fabrique Immatérielle (Immaterial Factory) or Compagnie Hey!

Besides the stage, he devotes just as much energy into the development of his discipline by leading workshops in schools, prisons, hospitals and conservatoires of music, as well as by contributing to academic research. Since 2005, he has also been a major player in the setting up of the French network of beatboxers, which has organised key gatherings (e.g. French championships).

Ezra has been working for five years with Bionic Orchestra’s engineers on the concept of “augmented beatbox”, by developing tools which go beyond the voice and enable performers to control sound, light and video from the stage.

This Is My Jam is a new way to share your favorite song of the moment and hear great music handpicked every day by friends.

We believe sharing music should be personal, visual, and not get drowned out in real-time noise. On Jam, you can only share one song at a time. This simple constraint -- a sort of musical "current status" that interoperates with many popular streaming services -- leads to an incredibly high quality of music discovery. Every song on Jam is someone's current favorite, updated at a human pace.

Avi Ashkenazi is an experienced designer that has the unique ability to juggle between the realms of sound, visual and code – combining them into a one cohesive experience. In his projects he explores the relationship between human body, music, and the multiple ways that they interact with each other, both in the physical world and the virtual one. His latest project, “Beatple”, involved creating a space in which an individual can influence the visual atmosphere in the room depending on the sound that the person produces. Thus, a musical artist can change the visual atmosphere in his shows depending on the crowd engagement (e.g. applause) or on the musical tempo. “Beatple” was implemented in 51% shows – an Hip Hop group that Avi was a part of.

Nowadays Avi is an MA student at Goldsmiths University of London. Prior his relocation to London from Israel, Avi was a researcher at The Interaction Lab, Holon Institute of Technology (H.I.T.) and worked alongside some of the top notch designers and studios, including the renowned “Talents Design” studio.

goPlay uses pitch detection and phrase recognition to allow instrumentalists and singers to control the software without the need for any external hardware. The idea behind the project is that, while MIDI controllers come in all shapes and sizes, they are not inherently intuitive to a musician in the same way that an instrument is. If you’re an instrumentalist or a singer who likes to perform with backing track elements and effects, constantly having to think about the technical aspect of controlling your computer via MIDI can be a distraction from performing well. Every time you want to interact with your technology, you have to leave the musical mind-set, briefly enter the technical one, and then switch back to the musical one. With this system, you are completely free to concentrate solely on your performance, while still being able to use extra musical elements and effects in realtime

Alex Allmont is a British artist focusing on emergent effects and slowing of attention as part of an interdisciplinary practice. His MA at Oxford Brookes University culminated in a series kinetic of LEGO sculptures that playfully engage with complex generative systems. His research continues at Oxford Brookes exploring tipping points in perception, with a focus on ideas of consonance and dissonance in rhythm. His most recent work questions the role of the performer in sound art and music through explicit systems with a flawed character. Alex’s work has been exhibited at Kinetica, BEAM, AudioGraft, the Mechanical Art and Design Museum, Festival of the Spoken Nerd and Raven Row.

Hugh Jones is a live electronic performer, producer, teacher, instrument builder and musician. Live as in the studio, he creates sound from machinery, found items, manipulated vocals, saxophone, traditional concertina and his self designed ‘Concertronica’ which he samples and manipulates through his idiosyncratic electronic set up, controlling his sounds with digital game controllers and (another original design) midi motorcycle handlebars. As well as his solo project ‘Crewdson’, Hugh Jones plays live with Matthew Herbert and Hello Skinny and has remixed for the likes of Brownswood, Four Tet, Accidental, Sunday Best and Ninja Tune. Imagine gathering up the thoughts of Stephen Fry, giving them a good shake, and rebuilding the resulting disorder in a totally original fashion. Sacrilege, you might think. What good could possibly come from this? That’s what YourFry is all about. We want you, the planet of creative and tech minds, to deconstruct and repurpose the words and themes from Stephen’s last two books. Just think of all the new and vibrant media that you could create for a fresh audience to read, view and enjoy. But what to create? Perhaps an infographic which celebrates literature and language, or an audio piece which contends with mental health. Text, data visualization, interactive web format, app, film, photographic, animation, 3D-models or live and experiential creations… the canvas, as they say, really is blank. The culmination of this project will see our elite panel of Stephen Fry and friends critique and award notable creations to be broadcasted on the screens of 10s of millions around the globe via our partner, WeTransfer. These entries will also receive a Penguin Fry Innovation stamp of recognition for their portfolios and networks.

The work of artist collective thickear explores and critiques contemporary processes of data collection and exchange. In a climate of frequent media revelations concerning alleged breaches of supposedly secure and private personal information, and the increasing commodification of our data and behavioural patterns as currency to be exchanged for online services, thickear examine how we attempt to evaluate and negotiate these interactions with works such as “Ministry of Measurement”, “MoM Data Exchange” and “Pink Sheet Method”.

The first of these, performance/installation “Ministry of Measurement”, was the inaugural project to be supported by the EU FP7 FET funded initiative ICT and Art Connect and a major feature of the Barbican Centre’s “Hack the Barbican” season in 2013. The work re-purposed the Barbican’s large cloakroom area to present a dystopian data collection centre as both performance and interactive installation.

The second piece, “MoM Data Exchange”, invited delegates at the ICT2013 conference in Vilnius to exchange personal information in return for data originally provided by participants at the Barbican event. Whilst the third work, “Pink Sheet Method”, taking place in 2014 across venues in Manchester, London and Brighton, encourages the public to judge the value of their own data against the value of the art work itself.

Formed in London at the beginning of 2012, thickear (Geoff Howse, Jack James, Kevin Logan, Tadeo Sendon) have presented exhibitions and performances at a host of venues and events including Arbeit Gallery, Music Hackspace, Music Tech Fest, the Barbican, ICT 2013, Lighthouse and the Royal College of Art.

This lead 3DPrint.com to interview the band; they said of the single: "it may just become the song of our times, as 3D printing continues to make a major mark on society". US-based '3D Printing Industry Limited' has also taken an interest in the band’s work saying, "3D printing may have its anthem". They have been championed by ‘Louder Than War’, who gave their first single ‘Skin’, “9 out of 10” saying it was “possibly the best single of 2013” and calling it "a modern day alternative classic". The ‘Skin’ EP includes remixes by The Woodentops front man Rolo McGinty, whose band Feral Five have supported live. They went on to release the electro-sass cyber-stress single ‘Strung Out’ with an accompanying video described as “David Lynch meets Shinya Tsukamoto”. Talking of their obsession with the darker side of human tech, BBC Radio’s Steve Lamacq, who played their single 3D on BBC 6Recommends, has cheekily said, “Feral Five could be Enid Blyton’s worst nightmare”. https://www.feralfive.com

Lizzy presents her freaky Robo-Drum-Suit and Henning Grambow controls sound via light. They bring life to electronic music. As a humanized form of a drumset, Lizzy transforms her virtuosic drumming into a magic world of innovative rhythm and sound. She has eight handmade Body Pads sticked on her body, from behind it looks like she has a jetpack on. If she wasn’t connected by wires and Midi Pads she would take off at any moment. Henning transforms beats and sounds by waving his hands in the air, above the LAN MIDI CONTROLLER. On stage with the electronic pop band LAN, he uses the LMC to destroy the seemingly perfect pop music. Both devices were manufactured by Lasse Schwanck (SugarCandyMountain).

Charly Massey is a creative strategist highly regarded for bringing brands together and making the seemingly impossible happen. For the last 15 years she has been working internationally with some of the world’s most famous companies to make genuinely engaging stories that connect with audiences; giving people money cannot buy opportunities and access to life changing moments.

In return, these works have offered established and emerging artists access to new, diverse fanbases, financial support and expanded industry connections.

Recent works include a global partnership between Coke Burn Energy Drink, Ritchie Hawtin, Sasha, and the launch of Burn Studios (cloud based EDM platform) at IMS Ibiza. Developing Relentless’ current Music strategy, Sony’s a-la-carte music subscription service contact strategy and helping Samsung to become more mobile savvy.

She’s won awards, broke world records, made page 3 and had work exhibited in museums, but most importantly she’s made good things happen.

OpenStage is the missing link between performers and their fans. We give control of when and where an event happens, to the people that matter – The Audience. Through OpenStage fans can connect with all types of artists and performers; fans may find profiles and events for their favourite artists already set-up, or they can add them themselves. Artists and their agents join OpenStage because it allows them to see real demand for their live performances, and propose new live events without risk, which remain provisional until a demand tipping point is reached. OpenStage is rapidly becoming a “hub” or marketplace for the performing arts industry, and with the involvement of fans, together we are creating a global, open, stage. Artists can create proposed or provisional events at any given location, and time. When fans find them and pledge their support, the event can become a reality. Fans pledge their support by making a Ticket Pledge, with a value underpinned by a registered Debit or Credit card, although no money is taken unless the artist confirms the event. OpenStage has developed unique, secure technology and partnerships that allow it to take Ticket Pledges without banking fees, allowing a fully scalable platform of pledges to be realized.

Bleepstreet Records is a small label based in Berlin with roots in the underground computer Demoscene. The label is specialized in artists who produce music with custom software all more or less made with old home computers like the Amiga or the C64. With new secret software and fresh approaches, Bleepstreet aims at showcasing what über nostalgic videogame nerds don’t. Live performances with real-time generated music, DJ-sets with the funkiest floppy music, VJs with the most untrendy pixel art, workshops for the wannabes, lectures for the academics, audiovisual chill-out sessions for the psychonauts, or even screenings of true underground data art. Bleepstreet was created in 1998 by Johan Kotlinski, most famous for making the Gameboy music program Little Sound DJ (LSDJ) that spawned a whole generation of Chiptune Gameboy musicians. With Kotlinski’s background in underground computing and alternative electronic music, Bleepstreet was from the start about unpolished and groovy 8-bit music rather than nostalgia and pixels. In 2006 he chaired the 6th International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). In 2007 he held the DAAD Edgard Varèse Guest Professorship for Electronic Music at the Technische Universität Berlin. In 2013 he published his PhD dissertation (Playing [with] Sound) on designing interactions with recorded sounds. Having created musical interactions that – apart from digital technologies – involve traditional musical instruments, chessboards, gambling machines, balls, and kitchen utilities he currently explores collective interaction scenarios based on web-based mobile technologies that essentially involve people … many people engaging in making music together.

‘Music metadata done right’ is our motto. That’s because we provide a music metadata database that is deeper and richer than anything else you are likely to find. Through our semantically linked database we can provide you with not only who played what song, but where they played it, who wrote it and who played the stylophone solo on the session they did in Abbey Road three years later. Data like this gives endless possibilities for discovery, research, analysis and plain old geeky curiosity.

Our database consists of rich data like this for 12 million tracks, from 1.1 million albums by 300,000 artists. We provide this data via a cloud based API that comes in a few different flavours depending on how much data you can handle.

Kendra Initiative is creating a performance and composition centric rights technology to protect content owners and their media assets – an open architecture, analogous to MIDI, for music industry business logic and processes: production, collaboration, rights, events, sales and reporting. Like MIDI, the aim is to enable various components (read 'media service providers') in the media content value chain to work together in harmony. The aim is to make services 'hot swappable'. Plug and play! The architecture will track media assets to stem and sample levels, enabling far more fine-grained rights and credits. Rights and credits will follow samples when used in another song, so creating a 'rights tree'. This will also enable new rights and payment models to be developed based on a system that has access to all the 'split' information. Kendra Hub is a dashboard for musicians and managers enabling them to manage and track their digital media assets, collaborations and associated rights, funded by the TSB and by industry. The open source application will integrate with social networks, rights collection organisations and online distribution points. Kendra Hub will also enable users to analyse sales reports. You will be in control of where your metadata is stored. https://www.kendra.org

A unique and revolutionary instrument, the dualo du-touch is at the same time a controller, a synthesizer and a looper/sequencer.Although the dualo du-touch may look like a kind of futuristic accordion, it is a real new instrument, based upon a new layout of notes around the keyboard in an intuitive, logical and playful manner. Scales and chords are represented by geometrical patterns, therefore easy to play and learn. In other words, on a dualo keyboard, notes that sound good together from the harmonic theory point of view are arranged next to each other! This layout of keys - called “ the dualo principle” is now internationally recognized as one of the most intelligent layouts of keys.A connected and collaborative instrument, the du-touch is linked to an exchange-platform that allows the user to share one’s compositions through interactive scores with other dualists on the Internet. The du-touch is also a wonderful instrument in order to learn how to play music, thanks to its integrated system, which reads the interactive scores. Each loop’s notes are then directly displayed on the keyboard thanks to the lights under the keys. Dualo's goal is to rethink the practice and learn of music.

vidibox is an application developed for iOS devices that allows audiovisual remixing and sharing of interactive video projects. The engine powering vidibox can be used in a range of interactive video applications, from consumer-facing apps to tools for installation artists. Our current app delivers real-time music and video mixing from an intuitive interface that enables users to import, record and play audio and video tracks using a transparent drum pad. The interface is extremely easy to use, with a wide range of editing options. Users simply drag and drop media to the play area to import it, and tap the drum pad to play it back. As a tool it opens endless creative possibilities for musicians, djs, vjs and installation artists and can be integrated in the creative workflow. Billaboop has been founded by Amaury Hazan, who holds a PhD in Music Technology from Pompeu Fabra University. Amaury founded Billaboop in 2009 to create new audiovisual interfaces and tools with an emphasis on mobility. The projects he has been involved in (RJDJ, chirp.io) or that he has launched (CamBox, vidibox) have earned international praise. vidibox has been featured in several international events: Sonar, Berlin Music Week, Paris Mashup Film Festival. https://vidibox.net

I want to present an Idea for a video app, that allows multi participants, easy operation and sound design for the square video format. I have demo screenshots and an initial Idea of how it is suppose to operate, it's very much repackaging technology that already exists out there, so I'm positive that it is technically possible. my main wish is to be able to gather a team that can join me in working on this app. (it is very simple and I think I can wrap it up even in 10 min if that changes anything...)

During his concerts the musician uses his body as a medium and sculpts it like a material. Namosh transforms sounds into movements or, visa versa, forms sounds based on movements. The rhythm is funk-esque, his music mainly electronicly self-produced. Occasionally his songs sound smooth.Since 2003 Namosh is performing mainly solo.In his concerts he hits the hotspots between ice and fire – between coolness and heat.

We are living in the digital medieval period and hoping for a digital renaissance. So argues Jeremy Silver, in this new book, Digital Medieval, which traces the technological and economic story that leads from massive music industry losses to the global domination of Facebook, Apple, Google and Amazon. He tells the story of how the recorded music industry struggled with change, how entrepreneurs burst onto the scene, forced the pace and how ultimately the experiences of artists and music companies on the web set the tone for the rest of the creative industries to follow. With over twenty years experience of the music industry and the internet, Silver is a digital industry pioneer. He built the first major record company website for Virgin Records in 1994. His fascinating insider account traces the evolution of music on the web from the early days of the cyberpunk underground to today’s mass-market mainstream. Silver argues that the “walled garden” business models of the major platform operators are leading consumers to a dangerous data lock-in and dependency which is medieval in consequences. He celebrates the importance and vitality of the open web whose innovation-rich opportunities will lead to a true digital renaissance.

cassiel: monometamicromatic

A live, barely-controlled ongoing collision between algorithmic step sequencers, sliced percussion, misapplied programming languages, cascaded effects processing and monome control surfaces. The musical material constantly shifts between tribal beats, pulse-based ambient layers and crafted designer noise as performance passes between LED matrices, Python and Clojure code blocks, delay lines, beat fragments and - somewhere in the middle - a human performer.

She likes to explore dark atmospheres, floaty melodies with strong beats. The live act is then never the same depending of the mood of the machines and I. She starts to experiment early, but really dive in the sound production at art school, in France, almost 10 years ago, creating some soundtracks for her small videos. After years of experimentation, the sound of Kritzkom became more structured and clean, although the grain and the unconventional contractions are still here. She also works on different music projects (Miko, Anna Otto) where explores with other musicians the interaction with machines and traditional music instruments. But this solo project is based on technology and purely electronic. Her first album "North In Progress" contains also a lot a field recordings from her nordics travels.

Un-Convention is developing an online resource, called Off Axis, which is aimed at independent musicians wishing to play outside of their hometowns. It will provide a new model for artists to work together to produce successful and meaningful shows, with guaranteed audiences across the whole of the UK. It will enable these artists to build national fanbases, visit towns and cities that previously would not have been viable, bolster audience confidence in the grass roots sector as a whole, and ultimately develop a more vibrant and sustainable independent live industry. This new touring network takes much of its inspiration from the Brazilian 'Fora do Eixo' circuit. Off Axis is the translation of Fora do Eixo.

Meta-eX bring a live open-sourced attitude to electronic music. For them, music is code and hacking is performance. The source code is their instrument and they play it live.

Formed by Sam Aaron and Jonathan Graham, Meta-eX apply the arts of controllerism and live coding to weave immutable data structures into ephemeral sounds.

Armed with laptops, monomes and number of MIDI controllers, they harness the full power of the SuperCollider synthesis engine through the incredible Overtone programming platform. They don't just use their laptops to tweak GUI sliders and pots, they program raw code live in their performances. They also program real-time visualisations perfectly synchronised to the sound. All their code for their sets is open source and freely available online to for anyone to download and hack on.

Live Coding allows music to be to programmed and generated on-the-fly enabling the direction of the sound to be changed at a whim in response to the environment. This results in a real raw noise rather than manufactured industry-polished pseudo-perfection.

The Meta-eX sound isn't hardcore, breakcore or speedcore - it's multi-core and fully hyper-threaded.

SoundCamp organizes an annual listening event linked to International Dawn Chorus Day, and the 24 hour broadcast: REVEIL - which follows sunrise around the globe, relaying live sounds from a network of open microphones. The first soundCamp took place over the weekend of 3-4 May at Stave Hill Ecological Park in Rotherhithe. Next year there will be parallel events in Aix en Provence, Upstate New York, Dartmoor, Crete and other locations. REVEIL 2014 was hosted by Wave Farm and supported by Resonance Radio, and aired on many internet and local FM stations. It assembled permanent streams on the Locus Sonus open microphone network, newly commissioned streams from sound artists around the world, and a variety of live audio from webcams, VLF stations, and independent broadcasters, to provide the first 24 hour 'Live Archive' of the unique wave of sound that circles the earth with sunrise each day. SoundCamp is working with partners to develop a network of permanently open microphones as a resource for artists and researchers. Toward REVEIL 2015, we are supporting installation of Raspberry Pi based streamboxes especially in ocean and island locations and in the global South, to provide live audio streams from remote soundscapes, many of which are under threat. https://soundtent.org

Andrew Shoben, founder of greyworld will talk about the potential of small sonic interventions, embedded into the urban fabric of a public space, to allow some form of self-expression in areas of the city that people see everyday but normally exclude and ignore. He will show a series of examples of work, both physical and aural, that attempt to establish special intimate zones, to ‘short circuit’ both the environmental and social expectations supplied by the surrounding urban realm. And to have fun with the city!

He will focus on the importance of creating physica and sonic spaces that offer people passing by an opportunity to join an unexpected ‘community of presence’ that initiates an intimate communication, which can often lead to a personalisation of the urban environment. Above all he will share his passion for a new public art that responds to and reflects the diversity of life, lived in and around a public space. Art that places the viewer at the centre of the creative experience, encouraging them to play with their environment, offering them a glimpse into another magical layer of reality. Recent projects include Trafalgar Sun, unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London - Clockwork Forest, in Grizedale, Cumbria and a documentary for BBC Radio 4 about the state of the UK's public art.

CueSongs is a one-stop music licensing hub offering pre-cleared recordings for clients wanting to find and license well-known tracks for commercial online and digital media usage.

Peter Gabriel, co-founder of CueSongs illustrates: “The old world of music licensing is still the exclusive province of the few. It is too expensive for most, rarely available online and can be painfully slow and complicated. By introducing low prices and easy online access, Cuesongs is creating a new market for music, to satisfy a huge untapped demand that can begin to provide new income streams for artists.” he continues. “Young and minority interest artists will be able to get their work in front of people all over the world looking to license something interesting and different. Successful artists will find that a lot of their catalogue that is now rarely touched can generate a lot of use, with easy access and the right price."

Yuri Suzuki is a sound artist, designer and electronic musician who produces work that explores the realms of sound through exquisitely designed pieces. Between 1999 and 2005 he worked for Japanese art unit Maywa Denki, where he developed a strong interest in music and technology. In 2005 he moved to London to study at the Royal College of Art. During this time he worked on some projects for Yamaha and Moritz Waldemeyer, and after his graduation in 2008 he opened his own studio in London. Suzuki’s work raises questions of the relation between sound and people and how music and sound affect people’s mind. Suzuki’s sound art pieces and installations have been shown in exhibitions all around the world. From 2011, he also became designer and visiting artist in Stockholm creative collective Teenage Engineering and Disney Research for interaction design group.

Since 2005 I’ve pursued careers concerning customer interaction - marketing, content, social media and copywriting - initially climbing editorial ladders in b2c and b2b publishing before moving to online content strategy, then marketing & EDM. My career to date has seen me act as ambassador for traditional print houses and much-lauded tech startups alike, creating a broad spectrum of content across diverse subject matter - anything from live events and the entertainment sec- tor to consumer goods and cloud computing. Dedicated to content and marketing creation that champions accuracy, context and targeted, results driven strat- egy, I have significant experience in the management of freelance and in-house staff, within larger businesses and a previously-owned magazine publishing company. Driven and determined, always willing to work smart and hard. I believe in the companies I work for and strive to do them better justice in the public eye. Outside of my working week I have recently co-written and produced an album featuring million-selling recording artists, and scripted graphic novels set for production this summer. That said, I can and will always do more.

Christian Blom (1974) is a composer living and working in Norway. Approaching music as not neccesarily exclusive to sound, rather as something organized in time, Bloms brand of musical composition is enriched to also involve light, shadowplay and movement. As a consequence he works with musical composition, kinetic sculpture and performance art, an expansion of musical composition to include compositional strategies for transmedial structures. His broad scope stems from collaborative work with such names as dancer and coreographer Alan Lucien Øyen, videoartist Ellen Røed and as a member of the artistcollective Verdensteatret. In these constellations as well as in his own projects a goal has always been to allow for the media and techniques to blend, to affect each others expressive and structural qualities to a point where they seem inseparable.

Bloms work can be seen and heards internationally on a regular basis. For more information on Blom, the works and where you might hear and see them please visit www.christainblom.com

FXpansion has been one of the industry's foremost independent music software developers since 1999. Headquartered in London, with a worldwide team of creative engineers and passionate musicians, the company has established a growing range of plug-ins and applications which consistently win press awards and inspire a large and devoted userbase.

FXpansion's mission is to push the boundaries of audio software. Its products introduce fresh ideas and new musical possibilities while providing intuitive, usable interfaces for creative people to harness technology for artistic expression.

Brief history:

Founded in 1999, FXpansion's first products included plugin format conversion utilities and DR-008, a powerful drum synthesis/sampling instrument years ahead of its 2001 release date. In 2003 it released BFD, a revolutionary acoustic drum sample instrument which brought studio-grade multi-channel drum mixing within the reach of everyday musicians & composers. GURU was the company's next major release in 2005, a sampling drum machine and loop slicer with a fast and creative work-flow that spawned a slew of imitators.

BFD2, released in 2007, and its ever-increasing library of compatible expansion packs built on an already wildly successful platform, making it the most flexible and feature-packed software drum solution on the market. 2009 saw the release of FXpansion's first full-scale synthesis product, DCAM: Synth Squad. In development for 6 years, its included instruments typify the ethos of the company: forward-thinking technology, cutting-edge sound quality and new sonic possibilities, alongside innovative user interface ideas to make sound design easier and more intuitive.

Internationally acclaimed beatboxer and World Loopstation Champion SHLOMO creates an incredibly energetic live show like nothing you have seen before: jaw dropping, inspirational and totally absorbing. A Guinness World Record holder, Shlomo gave up astrophysics to perform his amazing vocal pyrotechnics. It was a good move. Since then he has won global acclaim and worked with some of the biggest names in music including Bjork, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Martha Wainwright, Imogen Heap, The Specials, DJ Yoda and even comedians the Mighty Boosh. In the process he has consistently pushed the boundaries of beatboxing, bringing the art form to new and unexpected audiences through such diverse collaborations. Shlomo is a firm favourite on the UK Festival scene, having introduced Pulp, Chase and Status and Cee Lo Green at Glastonbury, collaborated with pop wonders Ed Sheeran, James Morrison and Jason Mraz and performing his sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Raised on a strict childhood diet of orchestral percussion and jazz drums, Shlomo instinctively began making vocal music as a small child. He first found critical acclaim as a beatboxer aged 18 when he began touring with the award winning multinational hip hop group Foreign Beggars, and was named the “Harry Potter of beatboxing” by BBC Radio 1’s Tim Westwood. This was designed as a compliment, we think – either way it wasn’t long until Shlomo was collaborating with Icelandic pop queen Bjork on her all vocal album Medulla in 2004. Shlomo’s performance on BBC2’s Later with Jools Holland was seen by Emily Eavis who invited him to host a 2-hour collaborative extravaganza at Glastonbury Festival. Shlomo was joined by a host of star names, including Martha Wainwright, Ed Harcourt, Portico Quartet, Reverend and the Makers, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly in a memorable and moving performance. As both a solo artist and a bandleader, Shlomo’s live performances never cease to amaze and are not to be missed.
